Supreme Decisions
Today marked the beginning of the new session for the Supreme Court, which may continue the march toward taking away our civil liberties. The current Court has extreme conservative leanings that were started during the Reagan Administration and are starting to come to fruition. We may be headed toward dangerous waters as the Roberts Court is packed with ultraconservatives that continue to cater to the "compassionate conservatism" that President Bush made his goal. Time will tell what how this group will impact our future with their decisions, but after the decisions they made last judicial year, I am not confident. I will try keep us updated as the decisions come down. In addition, I will try to put the important decisions in their historical context as they compare to previous rulings. Sorry if this seems like a dry topic, but it is very interesting to me.

What civil liberties are gone that you had last year or the year before?
On top of that, how is this court with appointees from three democratic presidents and three republican presidents extremely conservative?
Finally, the last time I checked "compassionate conservatism" did not directly correlate to restrictions of civil liberties...any challenge to civil liberties is probably more related to fascist ideology than "compassionate conservatism".
We have spoken about this in the past as far as student rights are concerned in Oregon. I'm not saying that every conservative view is bad, but we will see what happens to rights for prisoners in Guantanamo or the President's ability to limit State rights.
I found your post so vague, I was trying to see if I could related it to a grade school crossing guard not showing up for work (a job they volunteered for) in protest to the school district because the stop sign handle was too big, and sign too heavy, for their old hands.
But, then I thought about it for a short time, and came up with a true example of how there are becoming fewer restrictions on the actions and desires of people when a California court allows students who feel they are ‘truly the wrong sex’ to go into the other gender's bathroom in school. Or how in Oregon a known sex offender can legally stand in his front lawn and masturbate while he watches children walk by his house after getting off a school bus. Or how Vermont is becoming a haven for sex offenders because there are practically no long term punishments for sexual harassment, rape, or stalking. Do you know why? Because the state of Vermont does not want to take away the ‘rights’ of the convicted harassers, rapists, and stalkers.
I would also like to point out your massive misconception about what the purpose of the court in the United States is. They courts do not exist to make laws! They never have, until today. Liberal judges are allowing horrendous waivers, leniency, dismissals, and over rulings, to offenders of all controversial crimes. The courts, in the sense of amendments and bills, only judge whether they are constitutional. Liberal thought and the predominant brainwashing of mainstream media has being trying (and are successful in changing your opinion) to get people to think that the courts make laws.
