The Sweater Party

I alluded to the fact that we went to Mandy and Todd's sweater party a couple weeks ago, so here are the details. For the last four years, Mandy and Todd have thrown and ugly Christmas sweater party. We could not make the first two years because we were down in B/N and it was hard to get away. Anyhow, we went last year and were eagerly awaiting this years edition.

Well, living back in Naperville has it's ups and downs, one of which is living in close proximity to Andrew. Mar and I were planning on leaving around 7:15 in order to maximize our Saturday night. Well, thanks to Andrew, we were delayed. The reason being, was Andrew's new girlfriend, Autumn. (For those keeping track, this has given Andrew a leg up on The Competition.) Anyways, Andrew called me and asked if we could leave at 8:30 instead, so we could go together. I said we would wait, then foolishly asked him if he would be the one to drive. There was silence on the other end as he did not anticipate that response and told me that he was hoping that I would drive so he could enjoy himself. Naturally, this is what I expected, so I told him that I was fine with driving.

Well, 8:30 rolled around and Andrew was nowhere to be seen. After a few minutes, I called him and asked him what the delay was and he told me that Autumn had just arrived. I told him to get a move on because we wanted to leave. He kind of stumbled with his words as he tried to further delay his arrival and told me that Autumn was going to "eat a sandwich here so she wouldn't get your car dirty." This made me even more upset, because I could have cared less if she ate a sandwich in my car. Time continued to slip away, and at 9:15, Andrew and Autumn arrived, sandwich in hand. Mar and I looked at each other and said nothing as they got into my car and she ate the sandwich as we drove to the city. Draw your own conclusions.

Anyways, after pulling off the most badass parallel parking job ever, the sweater party was a smashing success. Mar got us a couple of awesome sweaters at a local resale shop and everyone loved them. Everyone at the party had pretty sweet sweaters, especially Todd's brother Brad and the dude that showed up dressed as a Christmas tree. It was great spending time with friends and kicking back for the holidays. I hope that Todd and Mandy maintain this tradition and more people can make it next year.

The Competition

A little while back, we were enjoying a nice meal with Todd, Meg, and Andrew at Quigley's. Our wedding happened to come up and Megan espoused how she was hoping to have a date to the Event of the Decade. We assured her that she would and expressed our concern for Andrew's odds of having a date. When this concern was mentioned, Andrew's ears perked up and he said with an air of confidence that he was not worried about having a date, because he was sure that he would. Upon saying this, the rest of us just looked at him as he casually ate his sandwich and appeared to be surprised that we were not as confident as he appeared to be in his ability to procure the arm of another.

Well, in order to make things interesting, a little deal was struck between Andrew and Megan. Here are the details of what is now known as The Competition:

  1. The wedding cannot be the first "date."
  2. At least five dates must be in the record book in order for the person to qualify.
  3. The person cannot be paid.
  4. The rules committee (Me, Mar and Todd) have the authority to strike a date from the books if it is deemed to be unacceptable
  5. The loser will have to pay for the winner's hotel room.
  6. In the event of a tie, the contestants will each receive five dollars to use at the casino the night of the wedding.
I am sure that several of you have already heard about The Competition, but I just wanted to make it formal.

Really?

Although I missed SNL last night for the sweater party, which I will post about soon, I saw this little segment today on the web and could not resist posting it for all of you to see. We all know about the current allegations that our esteemed governor is facing, but Seth Myers and Amy Poehler but a hilarious spin on it. Enjoy.

I Hate Snow

Let me correct that, I hate snow this early. It took me an hour and forty minutes to complete a commute today that normally takes between twenty-five to thirty minutes. It was horrible. Thank goodness I had NPR to listen to as they reported about nothing but our awesome governor.

Blokus

Jillian and Anthony exposed us to this game, and we just cannot quit. We went over to Anthony's house to have dinner while they were in town for Thanksgiving, and following dinner, they suggested that we play this game that his family had started playing last year. The only way that I can really describe this board game is a crude mix between Chinese checkers and Tetris. Without going into too much detail, the is a total blast. We liked it so much that we went out and bought it soon after playing for the first time. I even took it in to work and let some of my kids play. They too loved it and some of them have gone out and purchased it for themselves.

P.S.

Jillian has posted a very similar entry that just so happened to be put up today before I could finish my thoughts on the topic. I still believe that her and Anthony were cheating and conspired to defeat me.

Now On To The Jive Turkeys Of 2008

With out further ado, here are the year's Jive Turkeys:
  • Gary the Troll- I still sleep with one eye open for fear that this demon will attack me while I sleep.
  • No Airconditioning At Work- There where days that I literally thought I was going to melt away.
  • People Who Don't Know What Socialism Is- It got really old hearing people call President-Elect Obama a socialist. Look it up before you throw that word out.
  • Blago- Words cannot even begin to describe.
  • McDonald's- Can someone please explain to me why the McRib is only around for a limited time?
  • Fox News- The most heinous reporting on television. I love how people try to make it seem like these spinsters are unbiased.
  • Chicago Tribune- I view enough web pages on my computer, I do not need one in paper form as well. Please go back to your old fomat.
  • Prison Break- I do not know why we still watch this show. It is possibly the worst thing on television, but we cannot quit watching.
  • Salerno- So far, they have chosen to deny me of my Santa's Favorites cookies. Please come back.

It Ain't Cool Being No Jive Turkey So Close to Thanksgiving 2008

So, I started this around Turkey Day, but have been really busy, so it is coming up a little late. (That's what she said.) This has been a year of ups and downs for most people I know. We have seen several new arrivals while saying goodbye to loved ones way too soon. While the world has been weaving it's web round us, I have to say that the people that have gotten me and others through it all have been the best friends and family that a person could ask for. The small amount of people that are devoted to reading my missives are more important to Mar and I than I can put into words. Thanks for being there and I hope you all know that we have the best friends EVER. Now on to the additional thanks and happy thoughts:

  • Turkey Bowl- By my count, this was the the fourteenth edition of the annual affair. Although we were a little light this year in regards to participants, this is a tradition I hope never ends. LVP goes to Brian J.
  • The Chicago Cubs Playoff Run- For the second year in a row, we made a great run. I had the good fortune to go to the best regular season game that I have ever attended. Rami's grand slam to win the game in the bottom of the ninth was exhilarating. I have never experienced that type of electricity at a ballgame. In my heart of hearts, I know that 2009 will be the year.
  • Radiohead- Now that I think about it, I don't think I have told you guys that I went to go see Radiohead this summer at Lollapalooza. BEST CONCERT EVER. Radiohead is my favorite band and their music has been inspiring me since 1997. This year, I had the good fortune of finally attending one of their concerts. It was on a sunny, hot day in Grant Park, and I made the trip solo, as most people I know do not know how to appreciate the world's greatest band. To make a long story short, it was  a truly mesmerizing evening that I still think about. The show was perfect in every way and I am grateful that I just had the chance to experience the magic.
  • Frank the Gnome- Frankie has been a very welcome addition to our little family. He watches over us and the cats with his enchanting smile and showers us with good thoughts and feelings.
  • The Wisconsin Trip- Our little trip up to the Northwoods was a lot of fun. The cabin was beautiful and we had a lot of fun with the people that joined us.
  • The Battlestar Mid-Season Finale- Totally breathtaking. The best show on tv did not fail to deliver with a near perfect episode. I still cannot believe how it ended.
  • The Mist- As I have previously mentioned, this delicious beverage brings me joy every time I taste it.
  • My New Team- I recently met my new water polo team and cannot wait to start the season next March.
  • My Kids- My eyes are opened in new ways every day and show me why I chose to do what I do.
  • The Bouncing New Additions- As I mentioned, we have has several new arrivals this year. Welcome to each and every one of you. You all have great parents that will shower you with love and attention. I can only hope that you will soon know the joy of a Cubs World Series Championship.
  • Mr. President-Elect- We did it folks. By no means will he wave a magic wand that will fix the mess we are in, but I think he will give us a fighting chance.
  • My Family- They have always been there and always will be. Thanks for putting up with me.
  • Marilyn- Thank you for saying yes. We have been at this little game for quite awhile, and August 1st cannot come soon enough. You have made me the person that I am today and brought me nothing but joy and love. Seeing you walk down the aisle will make me the happiest man in the world. Our lives are just now beginning and you are the only person that I can imagine spending the rest of it with.

The Person That Made Me A Cubs Fan

As most of us know, I am a fairly devout fan of the Chicago Cubs. I know I may not always make it obvious, but they are and always will be my favorite team in any sport. This comes to a surprise when people find out that I am the only Cubs fan in my family, the rest being die hard white sox fans. Well, there is one person that is responsible for the fact that I am a Cubs fan, my godfather Bob.

Bob was my father's best friend and was like a second dad to me in my developing years, and he passed away nine days ago. My godfather was a jovial man with a thunderous laugh and a joy for life that was unmatched. He doted on me and made sure I was in the right corner of Chicago baseball fandom. I will never forget the smile that was always on his face as he manned the nearest grill while cooking up one of his patented delicious meals. Bob was always around for holidays when I was a kid and provided me with memories that will be with me till the next time we see each other.

Bob went through a messy divorce several years back and was never quite the same as the person that helped raise me. After losing custody of his kids, the twinkle was taken from his eyes and he grew distant to everyone, even my family. However, when we did happen to bump into each other, it was like no time had passed. A few years back, his health started to take a turn for the worse and he became even more difficult to reach.

Bob suffered a debilitating stroke a three weeks ago and I went to visit him for the first time in about six years. It was the hardest thing I have had to do in some time. Thank goodness Marilyn was with me, because it was very emotional. I couldn't talk for several moments and just hunched over and sobbed into his bedside. After a couple of minutes, I was able to talk and just updated him on how my life has gone since we last spoke. He met Marilyn and I told him about our upcoming nuptials. Although he was not able to respond, I know he heard me and was very proud of who I have become. We talked for a while and I told him I would see him soon. Part of me had a feeling that this would be our last moment together, but I did not want him to lose hope or the spirit to recover. This was two weeks ago today, and I never got to see him again since he passed the following Friday.

As I mentioned, the visit was very emotional for me. In addition to this personal loss, this has been a particularly trying Fall for a lot of people that I know. I sort of had a personal epiphany the Thursday after seeing Bob and told myself that everything was going to be okay. While I desperately wish that things could have worked out differently for Bob, I will forever cherish our moments together and memories that I have of him. This post is dedicated to Bob. I love you and will miss you more than I can say. Thank you for everything you did for me and my family. Your memory will always be alive with me and when we finally win the Series, you will be the first person that I talk to.

Of Mist And Men

I guess you can say holiday season is upon us now that Halloween has passed and stores have started to break out he Christmas/Chanukah/Kwanzaa merchandise. While it does seem early to me, I guess it's never too soon to find a deal. Well, along with holiday sales, stores seem to stock "special" holiday items, such as one of my favorite cookies, Jingles (Which have now been repackaged as Santa's Favorites. It is very important that you get Santa's Favorites, not the new Jingles. Santa's Favorites are made by Salerno and new Jingles are made by Keebler. Nothing against the little elves, but Salerno makes a superior product. Plus, any true Jingles loving consumer will not buy the new Keebler Jingles out of respect and loyalty. Here is an interesting post from a fellow blogger that shares my affinity for the true and original Jingle s.).

In addition to Jingles, I love the seasonal offering from Sierra Mist. It is called Sierra Mist Cranberry Splash. This lovely concoction blends cranberry with the lemon-lime of the original Sierra Mist with delightful results. I was first turned on to this elixir two years ago while on my way home from Indiana. While I was gassing up, the label caught my eye and I decided to give it a whirl. Boy was I happy that I did. Consequently, during the last two holiday seasons, I have anxiously awaited the arrival of "The Mist" as it is lovingly referred to on our home. Last year, Mar's mom even bought me a case for Christmas. So, if you come across The Mist, I highly recommend picking up a sample. For those of you that drink diet, rest assured that a calorie free option is also produced.

Heaven Help Us

If you have not noticed, our dear, confused "friend" Andrew has begun his own blog. It is linked to the right along with the blogs of our other friends, so take a peek if you dare. Mar and I have been at him for awhile, trying to get him to start a blog since it has proven to be a great tool for communicating with everyone. At first he refused, saying that blogs are only for people who want to sully the landscape with liberal propaganda, but he has finally seen the light. Make sure read his missives after putting the women and children to sleep, for it is not for the feint of heart.

Why Is Mike Singletary Not Our Coach?

Let it be said that I like Lovie Smith, but after seeing this clip, I love Mike Singletary. Most of us know Samuri Mike from his standout career as the Hall of Fame middle linebacker that anchored the 1985 Super Bowl Champion Chicago Bears. Singletary has always been a fan favorite and in the last few years, he has been mentioned as the next former player that will be a great coach. During Sunday's game, Singletary told tight end Vernon Davis to head to the showers after he committed a personal foul penalty for smacking an opposing player. There was still a quarter left, and Davis has to ability to be a game breaker. During his postgame press conference, Singletary responded to several questions from the press. Judging from this video, I think the assumptions of Singletary the coach will be true:

This is exactly the type of passion every coach should have, especially pro coaches. We live in a world of prima donnas and I can only hope that this man will one day coach the Bears.

Hopefully, The Hardest Part Will Be Getting The Horses In The Water

Drumroll, please. I would like to inform everyone that I will be coaching water polo this year. It became official last week, so I am a little late in getting this news out, but we are both really excited. Hopefully this will be part of the break that I need and will lead to a full-time instructional position. If anyone has any words of wisdom, do not be afraid to share. Hopefully I won't jeselnick it up.

UnAmerican As Apple Pie?

So, our beloved Sarah Palin gave an especially inspired talk this week down in Greensboro, North Carolina. During this speech she let the following gem loose:

"We believe that the best of America is in the small towns that we get to visit, and in wonderful little pockets of what I call the real America, being here with all of you hard-working, very patriotic, very pro-America areas of this great nation. This is where we find the kindness and the goodness and the courage of everyday Americans."

Can someone please tell me what the "real America" is? Last I checked, we are all Americans. I find it insulting that she would demean or imply that those of us that do not live in small towns do not work as hard and lack the "kindness, goodness and courage" that the denizens of smaller communities appear to have in abundance. EVERYONE I know and work with, with the exception of someone we will call Pandrew Prago (Just kidding Pandrew, so don't take me seriously, if you exist that is), work very hard and does everything within their power to live the American dream. This includes educators, engineers, scientists, municipal workers and even project managers (who we all know delegate the hard work to the littles).

Anyways, I am increasingly disappointed with the rhetoric that the McCain/Palin campaign has chosen to use and the levels that they have stooped in this very combative election year. Their attempts to spark fear and division in the country during their speeches has been despicable and irresponsible. While I do give credit to Senator McCain for admonishing the fools that have yelled "Kill him!" and "Terrorist" in regard to Senator Obama during GOP campaign stops, I think he needs to look in the mirror and ask him what has inspired people to yell such hateful things. This is not to say that Senator McCain is a hateful person, but some of his smear tactics and the choice of words during the campaign speeches have emboldened a few morons into believing that type of language is acceptable when electing our next President.

Sorry if this sounds a little like grandstanding, but I was honestly offended by Palin's comments. Now I will proceed to finish working on my supposed Saturday morning off before heading to my other job to work the lunch shift. Then I will go support a friend and her newborn baby, and make my final stop at home for the end of my six-day workweek. Tomorrow I will watch the Bears game, do chores around the house, grocery shop and hopefully have a quiet evening dinner with Marilyn before the start of my 65-hour workweek on Monday. Oh, but us folks in metropolitan areas apparently don't know what "hard work, kindness, goodness and courage" are.

How the Bears Jeselnicked the Game Away

After watching last week's unraveling, I was rather frustrated by what some people would call play calling and others would call gutlessness. First off, the Bears really had no business winning that game in the first place, but the loss still stung. Their third down defense was a joke all game, and their secondary was full of second and third stringers. But somehow they were able to finally take the lead with 11 seconds left after trailing for nearly the whole time.

So, now that they had the lead, with virtually no time on the clock, what does Lovie decide to do? A stinking squib kick. I will never understand the rationale behind this totally gutless approach. We are talking about professional players who are paid hundreds of thousands, if not millions to tackle one man with a ball in his hands. Did Lovie forget that the Bears are the team that have Devin Hester, not Atlanta? Anyways, I'm sure that we all know how this blew up in the Bears' face and Atlanta kicked a game winning field goal as time expired after starting on their own 44-yard line and completing a 26-yard pass.

Chicken football, by way of a squib kick, did them in.Jerious Norwood ranked 18th in the league in kick returns, going in. I mean we're not talking about Gale Sayers here. OK, he broke one against you the time before, so you get your special teamers on the sideline and grab 'em by the throat and say, "Cover, dammit. This is the ballgame." Instead, with 11 seconds left, you played puss in boots and set the Falcons up at the 44, which required one 26-yard pass to move them into field goal range and end the contest. You were playing on the road, so you know what the clock was going to be like. Having only five seconds run off, counting return, etc., and then only five more after the pass, never would have happened in Chicago, but...ah, why go on? No more short kickoffs, OK? If you're going to go down, go down like men!"

I have remained loyal to Lovie and his methods from the beginning, but after squandering three fourth-quarter leads this year, I'm starting to question some of the team's play calling. Let's hope they can get their act together and take advantage of a weak division before we find ourselves mired in another under performing season.

Mr. Puddles! Where Are You?!!

Here is another great Daily Show clip about the debate. I hate to have two political themed posts in a row since we hear so much about it already, but I think this was hilarious.

I hope he will eventually find Mr. Puddles.

My Favorite John Stewart Quote Ever

I have been very quiet about the presidential race, but I had to pass on this nugget from John Stewart. He was speaking at a function the other night and hit us up with this delightful quip:

"[Sarah Palin] is like Jodie Foster in the movie 'Nell.' They just found her and she was speaking her own special language."

Naturally, I find this quote to be hilarious. I keep trying to figure out how anyone can identify with her given the constant nonsense that comes out of her mouth. She seems to be totally out of touch with the general public and nobody seems to notice. While I do not completely buy the argument that she needs to stay home and take care of her family, I think that she may be taking a bigger bite then she can chew.

Gutless

While I try not to dig on the unfortunate few who pledge their allegiance to the white sox, this article makes it difficult not to. As we know, we are a Cubs household (Me, Wrigley, Murphy and Gracie outnumber Marilyn), and I try to be subtle about my support. However, some people believe that Cubs fans take their fandom a little too far. This story shows how sox fans are the ones that take it too far. Is it too much to ask for a them to be gracious in good times and bad. Ever since the 2005 season, most sox fans I know have become completly insufferable, and this is evidence of that theory. I understand that it may be a little difficult to show a little class, but I know that it is possible.

What Goes Around Comes Around -- Right?

So, yesterday I went back to my old place of employment.  I had an interview to work with a different girl in a wheelchair--way more needing assistance than the girl I worked with last year.  Mind you, I already told them no to work with this girl.  I was sort of just being nice to come in and interview.  My name must've been dropped somehow, by someone.  So, I went, and it was a great reason to visit with some old colleagues.
**sidenote**
For those that don't know-- I am not working at the school or with the girl I was last year because the assistant principal, pretty much gave my job away.  My job that they really wanted me back for (the teachers and the girl).  REAL quick version:  Talked to him on Monday (week before school starts) and he give me the run down of this girl they found to replace me.  I told him that I was waiting to hear back  from a different school--IN THE DISTRICT--about a teaching position (which he knows that I'm a certified teacher).  I said to him, I'm going to be honest with you, they're supposed to call tomorrow and let me know.  If I tell you yes now, and they call me tomorrow and offer me the job, I'll have to call you tomorrow and then tell you no.  (I'm sure you see how this ended up).  He told me he'll try to hold her off.  I then get a call back (hm...2 1/2 hours later).   The assistant principal leaves me a message and states, "Uh, good luck with your phone interview with Champagin and good luck with the other school in the district--we've offered the other girl the job."  And that was it.  Which is why I'm still looking for SOMETHING in October.
**sidenote ended**
When I graduated in May of 2007, I never in a million years would have expected to have such a hard time finding a job. I mean, c'mon, I graduated with a teaching degree from Illinois State!  ISU is a teacher's school!  A teaching degree from ISU means you'll just find a job--no problem at all.  Snap!  Presto!  You've got a job.  UM, no.   So, when I got my job last year in mid-September, I was so thankful.  Then my **sidenote** happened the week before school started.  *sigh* So lately, I've been searching for other jobs, something other than teaching.  Which hasn't really gone all that well either--especially with this economy shaping up the way it is.

Needless to say, it was WONDERFUL being back at the school I worked at last year.  I really, really miss it.  I worked with *such* wonderful people last year, and it was great to visit with them.  Also, most importantly, I got to see the girl I worked with last year!  Who mind you was driving her wheelchair and screaming down the hallway towards me, "MISS MARILYN, MISS MARILYN!!!  I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU'RE HERE!!"  It truly warmed my heart.

But yesterday.  Yesterday being back at school, seeing my girl that I worked with last year.  Being back around the colleagues that I liked and admired so much made me think...how could I not teach?  Really, what was I thinking?  Everything happens for a reason right?  What goes around comes around?  The good, the bad, and the ugly?  (I could come up with more.... )

The good: Graduating from ISU! Getting my job last year!
The bad:  Having my job go to another.
The ugly:  *sigh* This economy.  I still need people to move!  I need them to retire!

SO, my logic is...that everything DOES happen for a reason.  What that reason is right not...not quite  *too* sure.  And I am a firm believer that what goes around comes around, that means "The Good" for me is right around the corner--right?

No, Cubs, No

Well, it's over. Another year, another let down. I have to admit, this one hurt, but not as bad as 2003. On the plus side, I had a great time watching them this year. Ninety-seven wins is hard to deny, and while I expected them to continue their success in the postseason, it simply was not meant to be. As the saying goes, "There's always next year."

P.S.
After much thought, I have decided to put the blame on Anthony for speaking negatively about the Cubs in a previous post and Marilyn's black magic troll/gremlin.

Black Magic

Our home has been cast under an evil spell for the last two weeks. As most of us know, I recieved a wonderful birthday gift from my brother in the form of our Cubs Gnome Frankie. Well, a couple of former acquaintances believed that it would be fun to purchase Marilyn a white sox troll/gremlin. I fear that he is full of evil spirits and constantly attempts to cast spells on Wrigley, Murphy and I. It is truly a scary situation. Please send any recommendations as to how I am rid my home of the black magic. For the time being, I am going to fashion a garlic necklace to hang from his neck. Thank you for any help you can provide. In the meantime, here is a picture of the troll so you know the seriousness of the problem:

P.S.
I have made sure that Mar does not feed him after midnight and so far, I have prevented him from getting wet.

The Greatest Song Ever Written

Most people know that I am very loyal fan of the band Pearl Jam. Their lead singer is a gentleman by the name of Edward Vedder, and he was born in the suburb of Evanston. Well, Mr. Vedder is nothing less die hard fan of a baseball team called the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs play at Wrigley Field, otherwise known as the "Greatest Place On Earth." Last month, Mr. Vedder played a couple of solo acoustic shows at the Auditorium Theater in Chicago. During one of the shows, Mr. Vedder played a new song that was inspired by a meeting with Ernie "Mr. Cubs" Banks at this years Cubs Convention.  The song is called "Someday We'll Go All the Way." Here are the lyrics:

"Someday We'll Go All the Way"

Yeah, don't let them say that it's just a game.
Well, I've seen other teams and it is never the same.
When you go to Chicago, you're blessed and you're healed, The first time you walk into Wrigley Field.

Heroes with pinstripes and heroes in blue, Give us the chance to feel like heroes do.
Whether we'll win and if we should lose, we know Someday we'll go all the way.
Yeah, someday we'll go all the way.

We are one with the Cubs, with the Cubs we're in love.
Hold our heads tall as the underdogs.
We are not fairweather, but farweather fans.
Like brothers in arms, in the suites and the stands.
There's magic in the Ivy and the old score board.
The same one I stared at as a kid keeping score.
In a world full of greed, we could never want more.
Someday we'll go all the way.
Yeah, someday we'll go all the way.

Here's to the men and the legends we've known.
Giving us faith and giving us hope.
United we stand and united we'll fall
Down to our knees the day we win it all.
Yeah Ernie Banks said, "oh, let's play two".
I think he meant two hundred years.
Playing at Wrigley, our diamond, our jewel.
The home of our joy and our fears.
Keeping traditions, and wishes anew,
The place where our grandfathers' fathers they grew.
The spiritual feeling if I ever knew.
And when the day comes for that last winning run, and I'm crying and covered with beer.
I look to the sky and know I was right today.
Someday we'll go all the way.
Yeah, someday we'll go all the way.

As you can see, this song is capable of moving people on an emotional level, so go ahead and wipe away the tears if you need to. I heard this song earlier this evening on 93.1 WXRT, home of Chicago's finest rock, and thought it was the single greatest song I have ever heard. If you have not heard it, please note that this will be the song that Marilyn and I dance to.

Where Were You?

I know where I was. Sitting on my couch with my hands clasped and holding my breath. Then at approximately 9:22 P.M. on Sunday, September 14, 2008, Carlos Zambrano threw a no-hitter. That's right, I said Carlos Zambrano threw a NO-HITTER. It has long been a dream for us loyal Cubs fans to see a no-hitter, for the last one occur ed in 1972. The opponents were the Houston Astros and the site was Miller Park in Milwaukee. It was another great moment in what has been a season of great moments. Please continue your prayer campaign as we approach the playoffs.

I Heart Jon Stewart AND The Daily Show

Everybody has their own views on this matter.  However, if you are in the media...on TV...recorded, you probably should stick with the same viewpoints!!  Just my opinion though...

I hope you all enjoy!

Really?

Here is a sample conversation from today:

Person A: What country was that?

Person B: Guatemala.

Person A: Don't we own them?

Person B: No, we own Guam.

Person A: Oh yeah. The Caribbean island we own is Puerto Rico. That's right. We own them and they better like it!

Me: Actually, we don't own them, they are a United States Commonwealth.

Person A: Oh. Well we still own them, right?

Me: Not quite. They have most of the benefits of the fifty states, they just don't vote for federal issues.

Person A: Sounds like we own them to me. How do you know so much?

Me: I'm Puerto Rican.

Person A: (Silence)

It never ceases to amaze me.

Bear Down

I am a little late to the punch with this one, but HOW 'BOUT THEM CHICAGO BEARS!!!!!!! I will be honest and say that I was the last person to think that the Bears would be worth a damn this year, but that game on Sunday night was a very pleasant surprise. Now I understand that it was just one game, but it felt great to stick it to gutless Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts. It is a long season and who knows what will happen next week, but this first game sure did feel great.

NPR Is At It Again!!

This is a great day for all connoisseurs of fine music. Our beloved NPR has done a great thing and made the final show of Radiohead's North American tour available for all of us to download. The show was recorded at the Santa Barbara Bowl on August 28, 2008. It goes without saying that I have already downloaded the podcast from iTunes and have listened to the majority of the show. Actually, this reminds me that I might be overdue for mentioning the Radiohead show I saw this summer in Chicago. It was fantastic. To be honest with everyone, it is the single best concert that I have ever been to. The show that NPR is making available is very good as well. After listening, I would have to say that the highlights for me have been "Talk Show Host" (this song was a standout from the Romeo & Juliet soundtrack), "Jigsaws Falling Into Place", "Body Snatchers" and "There, There."

Who am I kidding? The whole set is awesome and if you have never given the modern masters a chance, I suggest that you give this set a whirl. Here is a link to the site that allows you to stream the show.

You can also download the podcast via iTunes. Just go to the npr homepage and look for the show All Songs Considered. Lastly, if you have not purchased In Rainbows, please do so. It really is a masterpiece. Every single song breaths with life and I truly believe that it will be considered one of the greatest albums of the first ten years of the 21st century when it is all said and done.

Oh Stewardess, I Speak Jive

In the interest of being fair, I decided to watch McCain's speech last Thursday. I have to admit, it was everything that I expected, which is not a good thing. As a matter of fact, the thing that stuck out in my mind the most was the fact that McCain constantly pronounced Washington as "Warshington," as if it has an r in it. I understand that people from different parts of the country speak with different accents and inflections. However, I consider it to be completely ridiculous that anyone would pronounce the name of our nation's capital in such an absurd manner.

Anyways, I was reminded of different types of accents and dialects when I read a recent blog entry by our friend Lisa, who lives in New Zealand. She has been down there for about a year and we have spoken to her a couple of times. Each time we speak, she brings up the different ways that Kiwis express themselves, which usually puts a smile on our faces. Her post is very amusing and it has led me to realize that I was perhaps being a little too hard on McCain. However, I still expect him to correct the way he pronounces the name of Washington, D.C. and say it like a normal person.

Also, here is the classic clip from Airplane! that highlights a particular American dialect:

One Of My Favorite People Plugging One Of My Favorite Shows

While looking for my frakkin' compilation, I came across this jewel of an Office clip:

Further evidence that BSG is the best show on television. So say we all!

When In Doubt, Frak It

One of the many great things about Battlestar Galactica is their liberal use of the word "frak." I know that many of you will tell me that it is not a word, but in the world of BSG, it is. While perusing the web today, I came across this great article that points to the cultural relevance of the word frak. I was very excited to share it with everyone, so here is a link to the article. In addition to the article, here is a little video showcasing the proper way to use frak:

Feel free to use frak whenever you feel it necessary.

History In The Making?

I hope that I am not the only one who was fortunate enough to see the Obama speech from last Thursday night, because it was truly a sight to behold. Mar and I finally got a chance to watch the speech on Sunday, and needless to say we were very impressed. The sheer spectacle of the event was awesome. His speech was excellent and I hope it will push him over the edge come November. We need a leader who can inspire the way he does and usher us into a new direction that will end the eight year funk of the Bush regime. As memorable as the speech was, I think it was only fitting that he was able to deliver such a powerful message on the 45th anniversary of Dr. King's I Have A Dream speech that has come to symbolize the Civil Rights movement. Hopefully, Mr. Obama will be able to lead us in a direction that will help us realize our potential for change and start a new movement for the future.

Another BSG Connection

Laugh all you want, but Battlestar is apparently taking over the world. I'm sure you all read my post from Monday discussing the idea of John McCain being the final Cylon. Well, it goes much deeper than that. The blogosphere is abuzz with chatter surrounding the fact that not only does McCain resemble Colonel Tigh, but his veep, Sarah Palin also bears a resemblance to our beloved President Roslin. Here is a link to give you more information on this breaking story. Creepy.

Yes We Can

I got a major treat last week: a free Cubs game. Most of us know that I am a Cubs fan, and I love to attend games. There is no other place on Earth I would rather be than Wrigley Field, watching my Cubbies win. Well, one thing that I have sacrificed for the sake of our wedding fund is purchasing Cubs tickets. I will usually attend around ten games a year, but I told myself I will just have to enjoy the games from home this year so we can have the wedding of our dreams. However, if tickets somehow come my way, I will always say yes. Last week I was lucky enough to have one of the teachers I work with toss me a couple of tickets for the game on Thursday, August 28 against the Phillies. I gladly accepted and was giddy with anticipation for the whole week.

After picking Mar up from the train station in Hinsdale, we made our way to the North Side and promptly headed to the Shrine. The seats we were sitting in actually belong to one of the deans at my school and were very good. We were on the third base line in section 407, which is a prime spot to view the game. Ryan Dempster was pitching, which is almost a guaranteed victory at home for the Cubs. On this particular day, Demp didn't have his good stuff as he labored through six innings while keeping us in the game. By the time the eighth inning came, we were down by 4-1 and the magic was about to begin.

Mike Fontenot led bottom of the eighth off with pinch hit solo homer, cutting the Phillie lead to two runs and riling the crowd up. Alfonso Soriano followed with a double and Ryan Theriot promptly moved Soriano to third with a solid single. This put men on the corners with no outs and Derek Lee at the plate. The crowd was really worked up at this point, but I kept my cool because I knew that nothing was set in stone quite yet. We were still down by two runs and there was no guarantee that we were going to take the lead. Well, D-Rock worked a walk out of his at-bat and the bases were now loaded for Aramis Ramirez. This is when I got excited.

As Rami made his way to the plate, I turned to Mar and pointed to the bleachers in left center and said, "That is the spot where Aramis is about to hit a grand slam." Rami then took the first pitch high and tight. I then said to Mar, "The pitcher is about to groove Aramis a fastball and he is going to give it the ride of it's live." The next pitch was a fastball, and Mr. Ramirez deposited the ball in the exact spot that I pointed to in the left center bleachers. I can honestly say that I don't think I have ever heard Wrigley that loud as the crowd went into a frenzy. Everyone was jumping and giving each other high fives as our Cubs took a 6-4 lead. They did not score anymore runs, but the lead was enough for Woody to hold down the Phils in the top of the ninth to earn a save. After the final out, "Go Cubs Go!" blared for the PA system as we sang along word for word.

This was one of the best regular season games I have EVER been to. Besides the victory, it was a real treat for me to go to the game and I was very thankful for the opportunity. I really hope this is the year that we go the distance, and I whole heartedly believe that we can. On top of the game being so great, the Punky QB sang the Stretch. It really doesn't get much better than this.

The Real Olympic Spirit

As I mentioned before, I really enjoy watching the Olympics. This year was no exception as I watched most night with rapt attention. After so many great moments, it was tough to pick my favorite Olympic memory from the Beijing Games. But without further suspense, I have decided that my favorite Olympic moment comes from Cuban taekwondo fighter Angel Valodia Matos.

During the bronze medal match of his weight class, Mr. Matos was supposedly injured and needed a break to regain is composure. Taekwondo fighters are allowed one minute of injury time before they are required to resume the fight. Apparently, Mr. Matos took to much time and he was disqualified, even though he was leading the match with the match in it's later stages. This disqualification did not sit well with Mr. Matos, and he promptly kicked the judge in the face and spat on the mat to show is displeasure. Mr. Matos was then escorted from the event by his support staff and soon after was banned for life from the Olympics for supposedly showing unsportsmanlike conduct that did not represent the spirit of the Games.

Here is a link to a recap of the event if you would like to read a little more.

A Girl and her Sports

All my life I have been a sports fan. Maybe not the die-hard, crazy, need to watch every single freaking baseball game when they play 160+ games a season type of fan, *DEEP breath* but nonetheless I'm a fan of Chicago sports.

I was extremely fortunate to be able to experience the glory days of the Chicago Bulls, with the six championships and all. :) I remember vividly watching the playoff games and Michael Jordan dominate the court. My favorite was my little point guard, John Paxon. For those of you who don't know this (I'm sure there are, hm, maybe a few) he is their current GM. I used to have this HUGE--like took up a quarter of my bedroom wall--poster of him. Back in the day, I loved me some good basketball! I still enjoy a good basketball game, and do catch the occasional games when Chris tosses them on the television.

Moving onto my FAVORITE sport. Football. I LOVE LOVE LOVE me some football!! I've always been a huge Chicago Bears fan! I can remember when the Bears won the Superbowl! I remember the Chicago Tribune, with it as a heading, I remember the little (maybe it's called a 45?) Super Bowl Shuffle record that we got--in the newspaper I believe. Needless to say, I love football. I love watching football on Sundays. Fantasy football has made me *so* much more aware of who's doing what on the other teams. Now, I may not know all of the "technical" lingo or what the "technical" point of a corner back is, but I can for sure follow a game and enjoy each and every down. A little FYI...I pray that the Bears put on a better show during the regular season than what I saw in the pre-season! Who's with me on that one!? :)

Last but not least on my list of sports are my beloved Chicago White Sox. Now if you've gotten this far I'm pretty sure this just put a smile on many of your faces. While football is my favorite, I do love baseball as well. But, it's a LONG season, with about a million games, so I do allow my life to take me where it needs to. While I may not know the score of the game the night before, or sometimes even what time they start (which is another reason why I love football...it's either Sunday, Monday, or Thanksgiving.)--but I surely know what series they are in and usually what the race is between the Sox and the Twins. I remember going to the old Comiskey Park, and praying that the upper deck wasn't going to fall off with all the people sitting in it. I then remember them tearing down the old one and replacing it with a new one. My dad totally had the side-by-side picture from the newspaper hanging in our garage. My other memories include ALL of my friends being Cubs fans. And me always being the lone Sox fan. Maybe that's why my heart lies within the heart of Solider Field rather than Comiskey--er, US Cellular Field.

Which now brings me to my next train of thought. There is absolutely, 100% nothing wrong with me being a SOX fan. Nothing at all. Chris mentioned "flawed" when it comes to me supporting my Southsiders (and I know he's "kidding"). And some, not all (...easy Ellie) of my friends have given me crap for it over the years as well. Here is my point. I support MY team because they're MY team. Not because they are by friends team, or the team that everybody else likes, or anything along those lines. I've followed them for years. I have great memories of games, stadiums, outings etc. Just because Chris or any other of my friends are Cub fans (or any other team for that matter) it DOES NOT mean that I should have climbed aboard the all of my-friends/boyfriend/fiancee-bandwagons and become a fan of THEIR team. They should all be proud that they support their team and that I've continued to support mine. Let me tell ya, it's way more difficult to support your team when you are in the minority. I've stood by my Chicago White Sox for years, and I will continue to stand by them in the years to come.

**Sidenote...not too much into hockey. Maybe now that it'll be aired on tv it'll be easier for me to get into? We'll see...**

AND...It Begins...

First off...

*ahem* I'd like to say hello, my name is Marilyn, and this is my first blog posting. :)

I have to tell you all that I'm a little intimidated!! Why you may (hm, or may not) ask? Well, Chris is a bit of a tough act to follow when it comes to this blogging era that I have now weaseled my may into. I'm not quite sure that I am going to have as much to say, or be able to share it as vividly as Chris. It'll be interesting, and I guess we will just have to see as time moves forward.

A few things to note about me and my writings:

  • Chris and I have two WAY different styles of writing.
  • I love punctuation! You will undoubtedly see a plethora of exclamation marks (!), the little ... (is that even called anything? Either way, I really love to using it...and will use it at every opportunity that I see fit...), and then the run of the mill periods (.), quotes ("), parenthesis (()),and commas (,).
  • I love different fonts! I wish they had more to choose from.
  • I'm big on smiling, so I only see it fit to use smiley faces. This bugs the heck out of Chris, which sometimes gives me more incentive to use them... :)
  • Spelling + Marilyn = Thank God for spell check!
  • I'm a pretty conversational type of writer. I feel like you should be able to hear what I'm saying through my writing. I can only hope that I convey my thoughts, hopes, and ramblings in a clear manner to you all. As many of you know while actually HAVING a conversation with me, I tend to get sidetracked, but then usually --wait! He said what? No! Not that she-- huh? What was that?! I get back to what I was saying--or in this case writing--at one point or another. :)
One thing that I can absolutely guarantee you is that it'll get to be even more interesting than it was before. Chris has done a wonderful job thus far. Together we have joined our forces and you will now get both sides of what's really going on out here in 'Thrill.

We've got a new name! We've got a new style! We've got a wedding to plan!
So kiddies, saddle up and enjoy the ride~

**Sidenote, I just wanted to point out that I did notice that Chris still managed sneak in HIS desire for the Cubs to win a world series into the title of OUR blog. I don't know if he thinks I'm blind or something, but to set the record straight, I'm rooting for my Southsiders to get ANOTHER world series. Hm...I think I just came up with an idea for my second blog.**

So It Begins...

Tonight, the new television season began for Marilyn and I with the premiere episode of Prison Break. Needless to say, it was a dud. I am not quite sure why we continue to watch this show, but it is sort of like itching a scratch that you cannot quite ignore. Michael and the gang are once again trying to take down the "Company" with some hair brained scheme that is supposed to free them from their various sordid pasts. I can honestly say that I hope this show does not make it past mid-season. Even though I feel like I am loosing brain cells by continuing to watch the show, I have this fascination with finding out how it will end. The real season will kick off tomorrow with the fist episode of The Shield's final season. We CANNOT wait to see how Vic and the rest of the Barn's residents will end their run. The Shield is one of the best shows on television and you would be doing yourself a favor if you started watching the past seasons on DVD.

The Great Outdoors

For our final week of summer break, we rented a cabin in northern Wisconsin and it was fantastic. I found the place online and it looked great, so I booked it. It was a little bit of a drive, about seven hours, but totally worth the trip. Most of us know how plain Illinois is, so it was great having a drive that was so beautiful. Lots of hills and forests as we traveled further away from the congestion of the suburbs. The cabin was located in a the town of Danbury, WI, which is along the Wisconsin and Minnesota border on the northwest border of WI. A few friends (Jessica, Vince and Sara) from Chili's joined us as well.

Well, the first night was only Vince, Sara and I. We met up in Milwaukee and I joined their car as we left Marilyn and Jessica in Milwaukee to attend the Sunday, August 10 Dave show. The trip up was beautiful as we traveled to the northwest border of Wisconsin. After the six hour drive, we finally arrived to the cabin and were happy to see that it more than lived up to the pictures we saw on the web. The owner was there to welcome us and give the tour. After showing us around, he left the keys and wished us a pleasant stay.

As I mentioned, the cabin was gorgeous. It was three thousand square feet with three bedrooms, three bathrooms, a full kitchen, 50-inch plasma hi-def television, wet bar, sauna, hot tub, deck, patio, a fire pit and two grills. The place was unbelievable. Sara, Vince and I enjoyed our first night there and just relaxed. The sky was lit by the stars without any annoying light pollution, which was a treat. Monday morning we made the trip to Superior, WI to do some grocery shopping as we waited for Mar and Jess to join us. Unfortunately, we had to go to Walmart to get the best bang for our buck. We tried to go to the local grocer, but the prices were outrageous. For example, a gallon of milk was five dollars. However, we did go to a local meat market for burgers and chicken. The fresh meat was great, especially the homemade chorizo that I bought and prepared for breakfast.

While in Superior, we made the quick trip across Lake Superior to Duluth, MN. Crossing Lake Superior was a truly spectacular scene. It was awesome seeing another of the Great Lakes, and Duluth was a very eclectic town. We headed back and finally met up with Mar and Jess. They were equally impressed with the cabin and we continued our week long stay.

As Brian mentioned on his blog, Mar, Frank and I met up with them in Hayward, WI. It was quite the coincidence that we would be in Wisconsin at the same time and only one hundred miles apart. Hayward is a nice little town with fun shopping and it was great to see Mickey and Minnie. That was a joke Brian, so relax.

The rest of the week was just spent relaxing and hot tubbing. We also made a return trip to Duluth so Jess and Mar would have a chance to see Lake Superior. Once again we enjoyed the sight of Lake Superior and spent time walking up the coastline. We visited some of the shops and had some great pizza at Pizzaria Luce. If you are ever in Duluth or the Twin Cities, I highly recommend stopping by for a slice. The last stop in Duluth was a trip to the Leif Erickson Rose Garden, another breathtaking sight.

Last but not least, Sara brought home a cat. One morning, we were sitting there and this little stray with a severely injured eye came strolling up to us looking for a bite to eat. Since Sara is a sucker for an animal in distress, she went up to Willie (named after our favorite Goonies hero) and tried to console the frightened animal. Willie did not have claws and was obviously domesticated. After a couple of days, the cat did not move on and Sara decided to take our little friend to the local vet. Willie is now named Millie and resides in Sara's loving home.

As you can tell, we had a great time. I will post pictures soon.

Without Further Ado

Well, the decision has been made. This blog will now be called Notes From the Blackboard. It pains me to see my passions thrown to the wayside, but they will remain frequent topics as I continue to drop my nuggets on the unsuspecting public. Marilyn will now join me as an administrator of the blog, which will no doubt provide us with her insight on my skewed perspective of things. God speed.

The Final Cylon?

Ben and Mindy came over tonight and we watched the Battlestar Galactica: Razor DVD. Needless to say, it was excellent and really helped to explain some of the events in the fourth season. As we approach the end of the series with the start of the final batch of episodes set to begin in January, I have begun to wonder who the final Cylon is going to be. Initially, I suspected that the final Cylon would be the Galactica itself, but I am starting to question this theory. Other top candidates could be Old Man Adama, Starbuck or perhaps President Roslin (that would help explain all of her visions.)

But after a lot of thought, I have decided that the final Cylon is John McCain. I know this may come as a shock, but I can really see it happening. He bares a resemblance to Colonel Tigh, who has already been revealed as a skin job, not to mention military background. I will post a couple of pictures so you can decide for yourself.

Pleasant Surprise

I just finished my first book of the new school year, and it was a very pleasant surprise. Elsewhere, by Gabrielle Zevin, is tough to categorize, but I totally loved it. I would say that it is a paranormal romance of sorts about how to appreciate th things you have in life, no matter which side of it you are on. If this is confusing, bear with me. The main character of the novel is a girl named Liz, who is recently deceased, don't worry, I am not spoiling anything. Anyways, she finds herself in a unique place called Elsewhere, which is where she will spend her afterlife. I know this sounds strange, but there is a lot more to it. Several of the students that I support had to read this book for Summer reading, so I read it in order to offer the best help. Boy am I glad that I decided to pick it up. I have read quite a bit over the last year, and I can honestly say this is the most refreshing book that I have read in a long time. It has a wonderful innocence that is irresistible. Keep in mind that it is aimed at young adults, so it may not be as deep as you want it to be, but it is definitely worth your time. Four Stars.

Olympic Update

After posting my thoughts on the Olympics, I came across this funny little column by sports journalist Rick Reilly. Enjoy.

Sports or Politics?

Like the rest of you, I have been thoroughly enjoying the Beijing Olympics. Watching Michael Phelps dominate the pool has been awesome. That 4 X 100 free relay was the most exhilarating finish I have seen since Gary Hall Jr. and Anthony Irvin tied for gold a in the 50 free in Athens. Anyways, even though I know the Games are a sporting event, this year in particular seems to be dripping in politics. Starting with the madness that was the torch relay to the supposed ages of several Chinese gymnasts, I cannot remember an Olympiad that has been so politically charged. I know that there were boycotts in 1980 and 1984, but I really was not paying attention to the politics of the world in those times.

So many different things appear to be in question:

  • Fake fireworks at the opening ceremonies.
  • Age of the gymnasts.
  • The right for groups to protest in three designated areas. So far every request has been denied.
  • Darfur supporter and Olympic Champion Joey Cheek having his passport denied. He was not allowed into the country.
  • Sketchy scoring for the Chinese female gymnasts that gave them favorable scores on routines that looked less than stellar.
  • Air quality.
  • Chinese censorship.
  • The insane picture that the Spanish basketball teams took in which they made their eyes appear slanted in an attempt to "honor" the host nation.
These are just a few examples that I could think of, even though there are undoubtedly more. Once again, I understand that politics been a part of the Olympics for a long time, most notedly in Munich in 1972 and Berlin in 1936, but none that I have personal memories of. I am dying to see how these Games will impact China in the coming years. The Chinese clearly want to prove to the world that they have arrived after years of isolation. However, I do not think that the Olympics have proven everything that they wanted them to.

A Sad Day For DMB Fans

This post is in memoriam of Leroi Moore, the departed saxophonist of the Dave Matthews Band who passed away today. He helped create some of the music that played in the background of many great memories for both me and Marilyn. We will both miss hearing his solos live in concert as he entertained thousands of cheering fans. Rest in peace Leroi.

What Would You Say

Now it is time for the second part of the Dave Matthews Band concert at Alpine Valley on Saturday, August 9. Simply put, the show was awesome. The best concert I have ever been to. Just kidding. Nothing will ever surpass Radiohead. Unless Radiohead decides to be the house band at our wedding. Speaking of wedding, I forgot to mention that the Radiohead concert was on Aug. 1, exactly one year before our wedding, so how could it have been bad. Did I mention that the Radiohaed concert was the best show I have ever been to? Well, in case I didn't, it was great. The show was in Grant Park during the first night of Lollapalooza and they played a sparkling two hour set. But alas, this story is about the Dave show.

A rather unfortunate incident happened to me during the first song, which I detailed in my previous post. The first song was a "Dancing Nancies", a personal favorite. The next song was "Seek Up", which I mostly missed as I was washing off my foot. Unlike previous shows in the last few years, the Band seemed to dig deep in their catalog and played old jam after old jam. This set included "Crush", "Halloween", "Ants Marching" and covers of Pink Floyd's "Money" and the Talking Heads "Burning Down the House." The personal highlight for me was "Spoon", a rare deep cut from Before These Crowded Streets. It really was a great show and here is a link to the set list if you are interested.

Why Dave Matthews Band Fans Might Be Worse Than Sox Fans

I will make no excuses for enjoying the music of the Dave Matthews Band, but I think I have had enough of their so-called fans. The seeds for this story were planted last year after we attended a Dave show at Toyota Park in Bridgeview. We hadn't seen them in a couple of years and were looking forward to seeing a band we both like after the dry spell. To put it simply, the show was a major disappointment. We heard couple of faves, but the set was primarily filled with their newer music, which neither of us particularly care for. On top of the set list, Dave fans have become more and more obnoxious as we have gotten older. It has apparently become a sport to get totally wasted and act like a fool at the shows, which is not my style when attending a concert. (Yes, I know some of you might bring up my personal debacle that was the Blink-182 concert that some of us went to. All I can say is that every dog has it's day, and that was mine.) Anyways, after the show was over we both agreed that the Toyota Park show was most likely our last Dave concert. We have both seen him numerous times and I personally would rather save the money, or go see a band that I have never seen before.

Fast forward to May of this year. Ben and Mindy were over for dinner and made the comment that they had four extra tickets for the two night stand at Alpine Valley this year. Marilyn said we would take them with no hesitation. Naturally, I was shocked, but apparently she had no recollection of our previous conversation. Her defense to taking the tickets was the fact that shows at Alpine were "the best." After three months of waiting, the concerts arrived and I admit I was excited.

Since we had lawn tickets, we had to find a suitable spot to watch the show. After finding such a spot, Mar headed to the bathroom (big shock). I was dutifully protecting our spot when an obviously wasted fellow walked by. It appeared that he was carrying beer in a sideways fashion and spilling it on the ground. My foot got splashed and and he continued to stumble up the hill. After he passed, I noticed that the beer was very warm and had a rather disgusting feeling in my stomach. I looked at the woman behind me and asked her,"Was that guy pissing?!" Unfortunately, her response was yes. This is the moment that my rage began.

Marilyn returned from her trip to the bathroom and I was totally irate. All she could do was stand there in shock as I tried to control my anger over having just been urinated on. If there was any type of consolation, I was happy that Mar was not there, otherwise she would have had her whole leg peed on. Second, I was glad that I was wearing my Crocs, which Marilyn hates, but they are resistant to odor, bacteria and liquid; unlike the sandals I was going to wear. At this point we headed to a bathroom so I could wash my foot, despite the fact that the show had already started. The next surprise was waiting for me in said bathroom.

After walking up to the lodge, I went to the men's room, which thankfully had an attendant. He was nice enough to grab me some disinfectant and I began to wash my foot. Since one foot was the sink and the other was on the ground, I was standing in an awkward positions. Well, this position was apparently inviting. As I washed my foot, another supposed fan decided that my butt looked good enough to pinch. Once again I was totally shocked. I immediately turned around and asked the kid what he thought he was doing. He responded by telling me that he thought I was someone else, but kept his hand on my butt. As I mentioned, I was only standing on one leg, so I couldn't really move, but I sure as hell could scream, so I kindly asked him to remove his hand and move along. I hate to beat a dead horse, but I was enraged that two people could be so drunk and out of hand that they decided to be totally ignorant. This is why I longer like attending Dave Matthews Band shows.

That's What She Said

This has to be the most inappropriate commercial I have ever seen. I admit, it caught my attention, but I don't think it was for the right reasons. Let me know what you think.

Ridiculous.

Radiohead Redux

I am figuring most of you did not read my some what lengthy post on Lollapalooza, so here is my second attempt. It was the best concert that I have ever been to. If you did read the post, you know that Radiohead is my all time favorite band, and really the only reason that I went to the show. I made the trip solo and, after a long, hot day, they came on at precisely eight o'clock ready to entertain the crowd of 75,000 that were anxiously awaiting their set. The set was awesome and the evening was gorgeous. They played all of In Rainbows and other gems from their catalog of classics. The personal highlight for me was "There, There" and the "Fake Plastic Trees", which was accompanied by fireworks. If you have any interest in more details, you can read my previous post that describes more of the show.

Name Game

As this quaint little blog is approaching it's one year anniversary, we are coming to a crossroads. One of the many things that I am nagged about is the name of our blog. Yes, I did say our blog because I always tell Marilyn that she can post an entry whenever her little heart desires. However, she has steadfastly refused due to the title of the blog. As most of us know, Marilyn has the unfortunate flaw of being a white sox fan. Due to this fact, she refuses to post on anything that has Cubs in it's title. She also objects to the Battlestar Galactica element in the title even though she watches the show.

In my defense, the title of this blog gets it inspiration from an episode of The Office. During the episode, Dwight Schrute mentions three of his favorite things in this order: Beets, Bears... Battlestar Galactica. It is quite a funny scene and I love all of those things except for beets. Well, I figured it would be a clever name for the blog, so I went with my own version, replacing beets with cats and Cubs.

So, for the sake of being fair, I will consider changing the name of the blog and you will help me decide if a new title is necessary. Here are the options:

A. Nothing, it will stay the same.

B. The Beet Remains the Same

C. The Ortiz Post Telegraph Intelligencer Gazette Monitor Times Sun Journal Daily Register Sentinel Constitution Press Banner Chronicle Advocate Courier Free Press Centinel Independent Standard Mercury Dispatch Union Banner Pantagraph Evening Advocate Herald Bulletin Whig County Crusader Ledger Enquirer Examiner Tribune (Just to be obnoxious)

D. Partly Cloudy (This is a nickname given to us by a friend at Chili's that claims Marilyn is a ray of sunshine while Christopher is a menacing storm)

E. Notes From the Blackboard (This is our nod to teaching)

If you do not like these options, we are open to suggestions. Results will be be shown in the coming weeks.

The Truth Behind the Dog Story

To borrow a line from on of my favorite BEASTIE BOYS songs, "It's time to set the record straight!" Apparently it has become fashionable to suggest that I enjoy electrocuting dogs, which is not true. Let me start from the beginning. Megan asked me to babysit young Caitlin, which I agreed. I was very excited to spend time with her while helping Meg out. After waking up late and busting my rear to get there, I arrived to pick her up at the Dwyer's house. Tim was there waiting for me and I apologized for being late. I asked him if there was anything important that I should know, and he said no as he left for work. I said hi to Caitlin and told her that we were going to head back to my place.

Before we left, I thought that I should take Shelby the dog out for a walk. Caitlin got the leash and I attached it to one of the two collars she was wearing. Now, I know that dogs do not usually wear two collars, but I figured the other one was a flea collar. Well, we head out to the driveway as I prepared to walk the dog. As I walked down the driveway Caitlin told me that I had to carry Shelby past the car to the sidewalk. At first I thought this was weird, but Shelby is her dog so I thought it would be okay. So I picked Shelby up and started walking towards he sidewalk. To my horror, as soon as I got past the car, Shelby started to get shocked. I instantly put her down and she ran back to the house. I cannot put into words how bad I felt. It was horrible. Since my cats are perfect and do not require shock collars, I had no idea what they looked like. I still feel guilty over the incident and hope that Shelby has forgiven me. As for the future, I will always be willing to babysit for any of you when you need it. Just make sure you walk your dogs and leave me explicit directions about how to handle them.

The Story So Far

Since I have been blogging, I have meant to tell this story but have not yet had the time to sit down and make a real effort of it. Considering the amount of grief that I got for having a particularly long post about my Radiohead concert experience and not yet telling this story, I figured it is about time. Well, it officially began in October of 2000. This was the fateful month that my Chili's career started. Hard to believe it was that long ago, but it was. Anyways, since I decided to hang up my barista apron and start making some real money as a server, I applied for a position at Chili's since it was on my way home for COD State. Needless to say, I got the job and started training within a week, and as luck would have it, Marilyn was one of my trainers. Now, at this point, I had no idea what the future held for me, and to quote Marilyn, "I did not think he was going to make it. Chris was too quiet, reserved and never smiled." This generally is a bad sign for a new server, but I guess I overcame the odds and here I am eight years later.

I eventually finished training, completing only four of five days since I was such a great learner. As I got to know my new co-workers, I started to let my guard down and get to know the great people that I was working with. One of these people was Marilyn. Not to long after starting the job, I was regularly hanging out with my co-workers and we all formed fairly tight bonds. After all these years, I still keep in contact with several of the people that I started with, even though most have moved on to bigger and better things.

The event that really kicked things off in my courting of Mar was a Cubs game. A perk of working at Chili's is the contests that they run. The prizes vary, but in the summer of 2001, the winning team of a margarita contest got to go to a Cubs game. The date was Tuesday, August 21, 2001 against the Milwaukee Brewers. We all caught the train together and upon arriving at Union Station, we saw several vendors selling fresh grown sunflowers. Marilyn made an off handed comment about how much she liked sunflowers, so I made sure to take note. After a great game, which featured the debut of Juan Cruz for thos who care, we made the long journey back to the Loop. While this shouldn't be a long journey, we were all listening to one of the people with us and he took us on a long walk that was headed in the wrong direction. Anyways, we finally made it back to the train station, where we once again saw the flower vendor. While Mar was in the washroom (shocking), I made my way over to the flower stand and bought her a sun flower. Even though this was before an official date, I think we both consider it to be the de facto beginning of our relationship.

Well, I had just moved in with one of my co-workers, Alyssa, for better of for worse, and we headed back to our place after the game. We all had a great time and rented a couple of movies. I really want to say we watched The People Under the Stairs but I am not certain. As I mentioned, we all enjoyed ourselves and Marilyn ended up being the final person to leave that night. Over the next few days, Mar came over almost every night to watch movies or just hang out as we leaned more about each other. We also took in our first concert together during these days. It was a Bare Naked Ladies show on August 24 at the World in Tinley Park. OUR friend Elisa had a crazy college roommate who won a limo and concert tickets, so Mar invited me along. The show was a lot of fun, and we both enjoyed each other's company. This all lead to the following Saturday at Bar Chicago.

Todd's brother Brad's girlfriend won a free party, so we headed down to the city to take advantage of the free drinks. As was my habit in those days, I had my fill, so my natural nervousness was gone. This lead to some mean carpet burning as I was pulling out all of my patented moves. Mar claims that I was not the dancing machine that I remember, but my moves were obviously impressing her. After the crazy night of partying, we went to a party at a co-workers where the flirting continued. At the end of the night Mar dropped me off and I stumbled upstairs to pass out. The next morning I was totally hung over and could barely work the double that I was scheduled. Mar bartended that night while I was in cocktail. I got my butt kicked the whole night while she watched a laughed. The laughing at my expense seems to have become a theme, but I have learned to deal with it.

Well, the two weeks of flirting culminated on September 4, with our first official date. I once again used my considerable skills and procured Sox tickets in order to impress the lady. This will probably shock most of you, considering the fact that I believe there is only one team in Chicago that is worth my money, but I was willing to turn a blind eye in the name of the game. We both enjoyed the game and went out for dinner that night. That night, we shared our first kiss and the rest has become bitter history. Of course I am joking. I know that this was a long story, but this is how it all began. Seven years later, we are still going strong and as happy as can be. Even though we are still serving ritas and fajitas at the Pepper, we both know that without that store, we would not have each other. Needless to say, this goes out to my little Marilyn. I love you and cannot wait to see you walking down the aisle towards the happiest American of Puerto Rican and Mexican decent in the world.
